Rememorar - Reminisce
Hubiera querido que Relicarios no naciera del dolor desgarrador que causa la muerte violenta, sino del dolor profundo, pero sano, lógico, que produce la muerte natural. Desearía que todos los testimonios que de viva voz he escuchado acerca de secuestros, asesinatos, masacres, crueldad e indolencia no existieran; no por que no tengamos la capacidad de escucharlos, sino por no concebir la sola posibilidad de que seres humanos puedan causar tanto horror a sus semejantes.
I wish that RELICARIOS had not been born from the pain caused by violent death, but rather from the pain—no less easy to bear—you feel when a loved one dies of natural causes. I would prefer not to have heard all the stories about kidnapping, murders, assassinations, massacres, cruelty, and indifference that informed this work—not because I don’t have the capacity to listen to them, but because the horrors that other human beings are capable of inflicting on each other are almost inconceivable.
Quisiera presentar esta obra con la certeza de que todos los testimonios, los territorios recorridos, los estudios, las lecturas y toda la información que he conocido sobre la guerra son cosas del pasado. Sin embargo, estoy aquí porque a través de Relicarios se ha depositado en mi quehacer como artista la tarea de custodiar estos objetos, de preservar estas memorias y de dar testimonio del sufrimiento que como país no hemos sido capaces de reconocer.
I would like to introduce this work with the certainty that all the testimonies, the covered territories, the studies, readings and all the information that I have gathered about the war are things from the past. Nonetheless, I am here because through Relicarios I have been given the responsibility, and as my duty as an artist, the task to custody these objects; of preserving these memories and give testimony of the suffering that as a country we haven´t been able to recognize.
No en vano el 9 de abril, Día nacional de la memoria y solidaridad con las víctimas en Colombia, Relicarios ha vuelto a iluminarse en la Facultad de Artes de la Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, en el marco del XI Encuentro de Derechos Humanos y Derecho Internacional Humanitario - Pensar la paz desde la memoria, las víctimas y los derechos humanos. Este día, además, tuve el inmenso honor de estar en frente a Rigoberta Menchú, Premio Nobel de Paz (1992), lo que significa, también, estar frente a sus muertos y a todas las luchas que ella, junto con su familia, representan.
Not for nothing on April 9th, National Day of Memory and Solidarity with Victims in Colombia, Relicarios lights up again in the arts faculty of the Pontificia Javeriana University, within the context of the XI Meeting on Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law- Think peace from the Memory of victims and human rights. On that day, I also had the great honor of meeting Rigoberta Menchú, Nobel Peace Prize (2001). What meant being in front of all her dead and all the struggles that she represents along with her family.
Estoy muy agradecida con María Victoria Riaño, Jesús Bejarano, Linda Castro y el Coronel Andrés Muñoz por haber reconocido en esta obra una forma de visibilizar la verdad, la tragedia y el dolor que ha dejado la guerra. Gracias por reconocer también en el arte una posibilidad, un espacio legítimo para sacar a la luz, honrar y dignificar no solo la vida de los que se llevaron a la fuerza, sino la vida en duelo de los que quedamos.
I am very grateful with María Victoria Riaño, Jesus Bejarano, Linda Castro and with Colonel Andres Muñoz; for seeing in this piece a way to bring the truth to the light, the tragedy and pain that war has left.
Thank you for seeing in art a possibility. A legit space to bring to the light, honor and dignified, not only the lives of those whose lives were taken by force but also the constant mourning life of those who are left.
La paz debe buscarse desde la memoria de las víctimas, porque solo reconociendo las heridas podemos acercarnos a la verdad más honda que deja cualquier guerra: el dolor. Los Relicarios son un reclamo silencioso pero potente, que surge de la búsqueda de esa verdad que se insiste en ocultar, en reescribir, que se anuncia como “relativa”, pero ¿cuándo puede ser relativo el dolor de la guerra?
El arte es el medio que me ha permitido acercarme a esa verdad, porque hay verdades a las que solo podemos acceder mediante el sentir. Cada Relicario resplandece porque cada objeto es portador del amor con el cual han sido atesorado, son vestigios de vidas interrumpidas injustamente y algunos son, simbólicamente, lugar de reposo de muertos que no han podido, ni podrán ser enterrados. Mi invitación y conclusión como artista es que es en la vida misma donde la resistencia tiene lugar.
Pease must be found through the memory of the victims because only when we recognize the wounds we can reach the most profound truth that war let us: Pain. The reliquaries are a silent but strong claim that comes out of the search for that true that is reluctantly hidden, rewritten, that is announced as ‘relative’, but; how relative can be the pain of war?
Art is the mean from which I have been able to get closer to that true because there are trues that we can only reach through feeling. Each reliquary shines because each object contains the love with which it has been treasured. They are vestiges of unjustly interrupted lives; some are, symbolically, resting places for those who had not, and will not have a proper burial. As an artist, my conclusion and invitation are that it´s in life itself where resistance takes place.
Una obra como Relicarios es imposible de instalar sin un equipo de profesionales, los cuales, cada uno desde su disciplina aporta su conocimiento, y desde su calidad humana y compromiso son capaces de dar, no solo lo mejor de sí, sino aún más. Esta vez el montaje fue de una intensidad mayor, pero como siempre cada uno, a su manera, se puso a la altura de los retos y gracias a esa entrega pudimos sacar la exposición adelante. A piece like Relicarios wouldn´t be possible to set up, if not for a team of professionals whom, through the knowledge of their respective disciplines, human touch and commitment contribute to it. Giving, not only the best of them but even more. This setup was of higher intensity, but as always, each one of them, in their own way, stood up to the challenge and thanks to their commitment we could saw the exhibition through to the end.
